Stephanoceras Waagen 1869
Bajocien inférieur.
Le sous-genre Stephanoceras (et même le genre) souffre d’un grand nombre d’espèces ne reflétant probablement pas la réalité biologique. Les monotypies sont nombreuses, les types souvent limités à des tours internes et leurs niveaux stratigraphiques imprécis. Pour les faunes européennes, il s’en trouve chez Quenstedt, Buckman, Schmidtill & Krumbeck, Weisert, Maubeuge et, plus épisodiquement, d’autres. En conséquence, les interprétations des auteurs varient énormément, avec des mises en synonymies très variables. Qui plus est, l’étude statistique de Schmidt & Korn (2021) sur la morphologie d’un grand nombre coquilles collectées dans un gisement de Normandie montre une grande variation de l’ornementation et de la géométrie lors de l’ontogénèse et ne parvient pas à établir des limites claires entre les espèces possibles. Il est très compliqué d’établir une hiérarchie de caractères qui permettrait une ébauche de classification phylogénététique.
Formes serpenticônes atteignant de grandes tailles, à tours robustes. Section régulièrement arrondie à modérément déprimée. Tubercules latéraux proéminents sur toute l’ontogénèse. [Howarth 2017]
Stephanoceras Waagen 1869
Aalénien supérieur à Bajocien inférieur.
Formes macroconques atteignant de grandes tailles (les formes microconques associées sont représentées par le genre Normannites Munier-Chalmas). Enroulement évolute serpenticône à cadicône. Section du tour arrondie à très déprimée. Côtes primaires fortes et courtes, divisées bas ou à mi-flanc en deux à quatre secondaire à partir d’un tubercule ou d’une bulla latéraux. Les côtes traversent la région ventrale. La costulation persiste jusqu’en fin d’ontogénèse. Le péristome est évasé et porte un col. [Howarth 2017]
Stephanoceratinae Neumayr 1875
Aalénien supérieur à Bajocien supérieur.
Formes petites à grandes, serpenticônes à cadicônes, à section ronde, ovale ou trapézoïdale. Côtes primaires généralement proéminentes. Secondaires plus faibles et nombreuses, traversant généralement le ventre sans interruption. Eventuel tubercule bien différencié au point de division. Sutures complexes. Lobe ombilical rétracté et éléments auxiliaires obliques. E bien développé, presque aussi profond que L, plus étroit. Selle E/L plus haute que L/U2 et plus ou moins asymétrique. Dimorphisme sexuel important.
Stephanoceratidae Neumayr 1875
Aalénien supérieur à Callovien inférieur.
Dérivent, selon Westermann (1964) d’une espèce serpenticône d’Erycites de la zone à Murchisonae.
Formes évolutes, cadicônes à serpenticônes, de section circulaire à fortement déprimée. Loge d’habitation adulte variant d’un demi-tour à plus de deux tours chez certains Skirroceras. Costulation forte, portant souvent un tubercule au point de division en au moins deux secondaires qui traversent le ventre, parfois interrompues par une bande ventrale ou un sillon chez certaines familles. Dimorphisme marqué, avec des macroconques au moins 4 fois plus grands que les microconques, à péristome simple, parfois avec un fort col terminal, exprimé en moulage interne par un large étranglement peu profond. Leur costulation peut s’évanouir sur la loge. Ils possèdent des sutures à longs lobes très découpés et des lobes ombilicaux très rétractés. Les microconques ont un péristome nettement constricté et portent des apophyses simples à largement spatulées. [Howarth 2007]

Oolite de Bayeux, zone à Humphriesianum.
Quelques points communs avec Stephanoceras pyritosum QUENSTEDT mais un enroulement plus régulier et une hauteur relative de tour toujours nettement inférieure. L’épaisseur relative, l’ouverture relative de l’ombilic et l’indice de division sont similaires. La costulation primaire est un peu plus dense dans les tours moyens et dépourvue de petit tubercule au point de division.
